History

Hillsborough Education Foundation has been a part of the community since 1996. It was created in response to a community initiative that included the identification and prioritization of the needs of the public school system. At that time, the most pressing of these needs was the hardwiring of the schools for computers. This was accomplished with funding from as well as manpower recruited by the Foundation. One of HEF’s initial grants funded a Robotics Club – a group that has expanded significantly over the years. Since then we have supported a wide range of innovative programs in the elementary, middle and high schools as well as awarded mini-grants for a variety of classroom initiatives. Grants have ranged from funding presentations by nationally acclaimed poets to partnering with other organizations to fund the building of an artificial turf field at the high school to supporting summer programs for teachers. One of HEF’s core programs has been scholarships for post-secondary education to graduating seniors totaling over a quarter million dollars. Since its inception, HEF has not missed a year in which it has not given one or more scholarships to deserving students.
