Subject: Gov. Christie Announces Cuts to Public Education

Governor Chris Christie unveiled a $29.3 billion budget yesterday that relies almost exclusively on spending cuts to reverse the state deficit. To close a deficit that he asserted was approaching $11 billion, Governor Christie called for the layoffs of 1,300 state workers, closings of state psychiatric institutions, an $820 million cut in aid to public schools, and nearly a half-billion dollars less in aid to towns and cities. Visit www.NJEFP.org to learn more.

School districts will be finding out today or tomorrow how much their funding from the state will be reduced. It could be as much as 5% of their total budget! This is a challenging time for public education in New Jersey.

As the state consortium of local education foundation and advocates of public education, we want to keep you informed to help you position your education foundation to be in the best place possible to support your schools and education of your children.

We are planning a special evening meeting specifically on this issue. We will let you know as soon as we have a time and place.

We have posted three key articles on our website to assist you in learning more about the budget.   Visit our website at www.NJEFP.org to download Budget Brief, NJ School Boards Association’s press release, and the article in the New York Times.

We would love to hear your comments,  thoughts, and suggestions on this matter. Thank you.
